Overview
Both USMARC importing and z39.50 importing works by importing data in MARC format. MARC Standards are defined by the library of congress. For a complete list of MARC tags defined by the library of congress see here: http://www.loc.gov/marc/
If you are importing data that contains a tag that isn’t defined by the Global Catalogue (or you want to adjust a predefined tag to be imported elsewhere in the catalogue) you can configure the MARC tags of your importer by following the steps below.
Making changes to the MARC Tags
1. Login and click on the Menu button, Then Catalogue and select Global Catalogue
2. Hover over the [Right-Click to resize] tab on the left of the screen
3. Click Configuration
4. Click on MARC Tags option,
The MARC Tags screen will now appear
To add a new entry into your MARC tag definitions, scroll to the bottom of the MARC Definition page. You will then see a line of blank fields, as you can see in the image above.
5) Add in the necessary information and then click on the green Save button at the very left hand side of the row.
Understanding MARC Tags
All tags will contain the following field in formation:
a) Display Name – This is just a visual display name for your purposes. It doesn’t matter what is entered in here, so long as it makes sense to you
b) Main Tag. This where you enter in the Main Tag number. For example if you were wanting to import a title, you would enter in Main Tag number ‘245’.
c) Sub Tag. This is where you enter in the sub tag. For example, all title information available in Main Tag 245, as defined by Library of Congress, is:
$a - Title (NR)
$b - Remainder of title (NR)
$c - Statement of responsibility, etc. (NR)
$f - Inclusive dates (NR)
$g - Bulk dates (NR)
$h - Medium (NR)
$k - Form (R)
$n - Number of part/section of a work (R)
$p - Name of part/section of a work (R)
$s - Version (NR)
$6 - Linkage (NR)
$8 - Field link and sequence number (R)
So if we only wanted to import the main part of the title, we would put in ‘a’ in the Sub tag. (If we also wanted to import subtag b, we would add a brand new entry in the MARC tag table just for 245 b)
d) Indicator - When importing from SCIS, Curriculum Corporation provides you with both a shortend call number and a full call number
You can specify which call number you want to import via the indicator. Putting '14' in the indicator will import the shortend call number. Putting '04' in the indicator field will import the full Dewey.
e) Mapping Field - This determines which field in SmartSuite the data is imported to
f) Final Punctuation - This determines which punctuation characters to remove from the end of each imported record. To remove punctuation characters from the end of data, simply add the characters you want remove into the Final Punctuation box.
There is no separator characters needed for this field, just type each punctuation character you want removed, one after another.
For example, if you wanted full stops and commas removed, you would type: . ,
